Mr. Cyril Basnayake (1932-2023) distinguished himself as a preeminent photographer from Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, with an illustrious career in photojournalism and studio photography that spanned over six decades. His artistic achievements were internationally recognized when he was honored with the prestigious Hons. F.N.P.A.S title by the Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique (FIAP) in France, following his acclaimed exhibitions in 1966 and 1969. FIAP, a global entity, is renowned for its commitment to advancing photography through various events and competitions.
As an early adherent of The National Photographic Art Society of Sri Lanka (NPASL), founded in 1950, Basnayake had the privilege of being mentored by the late Mr. Wilson Hegoda, the founder of NPASL. This early exposure significantly shaped his career, leading him to become a distinguished photojournalist. He contributed his talents to 'The Island', an English Newspaper, as well as 'Dawasa' and 'Divaina', both Sinhala newspapers, from 1969 to 2019. Mr. Cyril Basnayake, a luminary in the field of photography, passed away at the age of 93 on March 7, 2023. His demise marks the end of an era in photographic artistry, leaving a legacy that spans over six decades. His contributions to photojournalism and studio photography have been profoundly influential, not only in Sri Lanka but also on the international stage. Mr. Basnayake's distinguished career and his enduring impact on the photographic community will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.
Tharaka Basnayaka, the younger son of the late Cyril Basnayaka and the founder of 'Fotoography', has embarked on a commendable initiative to honor his father's legacy. In a tribute to his father's significant contributions to the field of photography, Tharaka established a fellowship program. Despite the early stages, the program is designed to nurture and support emerging photographers in Sri Lanka, providing them with opportunities to develop their skills and showcase their talents. This initiative not only commemorates the remarkable career of Cyril Basnayaka but also serves as a valuable platform for the next generation of photographers in the country.
